The Protestant Reformation was a movement that took place within Christianity, protesting the false doctrines, and the pope’s ruling as infallible and being the same as the Word of the Lord. It took form in 1517, Martin Luther was the most important theologian of the Reformation. Luther never intended to separate from the Catholic Church, but to come to a change of the heretical doctrines, from there is the name Reformed. Martin Luther was an Augustinian monk who was a professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg. A monk, John of Tetzel had been commissioned by an authority of the (Holy Roman Empire) to collect large sums of money by selling indulgences. This was one of Luther’s motivations for openly opposing the sale of indulgences. Most of it would be used for the building of the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Furthermore, Luther was critical of other practices such as simony, that is, the sale of ecclesiastical offices and functions. Luther understood that these actions of the Catholic Church went against his understanding of the Christian faith. Luther reading the Bible in the Monastery where he was, found in Romans 1:17 “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” So Luther saw that salvation was NOT by works, but only through faith. Luther's dissatisfaction, as mentioned, was not intended to promote a breakup or divide the Catholic Church. He just wanted to fight practices that he considered inappropriate so that the Catholic faith could be Reformed and heresies removed.
